JUBILATION AS FG COMMISSIONS THE FLOOD/EROSION AND FLOOD CONTROL AND ROAD IMPROVEMENT WORKS IN PARTS OF NNOBI, ALOR AND UMUDIOKA TOWNS IN IDEMILI SOUTH/DUNUKOFIA LGAS, ANAMBRA STATE
The people of Nnobi, Alor and Umudioka communities in Idemili South and Dunukofia Local Government Areas on Friday rolled out drums in jubilation to celebrate the commissioning and handover project executed by the Ecological Fund Office. The project as approved by the President in 2018, was expected to address the devastating effect of erosion and flood menace in the communities.
Speaking at the commissioning and handing over ceremony, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by Chief (Bar.) Sharon Ikeazor, Honourable Minister of State for Environment reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensure that no part of the country will suffer neglect owing to its geographical location or political inclination.
He noted that the successful completion of the project would not only better the safety and general wellbeing of the citizens of the benefitting communities but would also enhance and improve their standard of living and socio-economic activities. While appreciating the Permanent Secretary of Ecological Fund Office for the intervention works, Chief (Bar) Ikeazor urged the communities to own, protect, secure and maintain the project.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ecological Fund Office (EFO), Dr. Habiba Lawal, represented by Engr. Felix Okeke, Director Soil Erosion and Flood Control, Ecological Fund Office, in her welcome address pointed out that the project was initiated through a request for an urgent intervention forwarded by the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige to arrest the continuous erosion, flooding and other ecological challenges in Nnobi, Alor and Umudioka Towns and avoid further environmental degradation, loss of lives and properties in the communities.
She revealed that the project would serve the dual purpose of enabling the communities take over and exercise ownership as well as ensure its maintenance and sustainability, thereby avoid waste.
In his goodwill message, the executive Governor of Anambra state Chief Willie Obiano, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Professor Osita Chukwulobelu while commending the gigantic project brought to the three communities, pleaded that other communities in Anambra State bedeviled with erosion menace be considered.
Delivering his speech, the Onowu of Alor Community, Ichie Okwuchukwu Ezekwesili commended the government for coming to their rescue as the project had brought succor to the benefitting communities. He also showered encomiums and prayer for all who contributed to these laudable projects.
The President General of Alor Community, Chief Uzomma Igbonwa Okeife, represented by Dr Carl Nwudo-Odenigbo thanked the Federal Government for the gesture, commended the effort of the Permanent Secretary of Ecological Fund Office for the urgent intervention and appreciated the duo of Chief (Bar) Sharon Ikeazor and Anambra State Governor for making the intervention possible. On behalf of the communities, He assured the federal government that they had taken over the ownership of the project and promised to protect and judiciously use it.
The event featured the unveiling of plaque, handover of certificate, cultural dance display among others.
Present at the event were Chief Afam Nwudo-Odenigbo, Hon. Bar. Ngozi Udodi, Nnobi Council of elders, Overseeing head Special duties, Fed. Ministry of Environment, Directors and senior Officers from EFO and Ministry of Environment among other dignitaries.
