FG BRINGS SUCCOR TO ENUGU COMMUNITIES

The Ogui-Agu, Eke and Umuoka communities in Udi Local government area of Enugu have benefitted from FG intervention projects through the Ecological Fund Office (EFO).

The project which is erosion control and road improvement works has improved the living standard of the people as the incessant erosion and flooding which had resulted to loss of lives and properties has been addressed.

Commissioning the project over the weekend, the President Muhamadu Buhari stated that the completion of the project underlines the FG’s unwavering determination and sincerity of purpose in tackling problems facing the citizenry.  He pointed out that projects such as this severs as a solid foundation to build a more, prosperous and developed nation.

The president represented by Hon. Linda Ikpeazu, Member, House Committee on Ecology implored the communities to cherish this laudable project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels.

Earlier in her address, the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office (EFO) Dr. Habiba Lawal represented by Mr. Mathias Eluma, a director in the Soil Erosion and Flood Control department stated that the 3.8km erosion control and road improvement works was initiated through a request for an urgent intervention forwarded to the Ecological Fund office by the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama.  This he noted was to arrest the continuous erosion, flood and other ecological challenges in the communities.

The Permanent Secretary attributed the timely completion of the project to the efforts of the project contractor and the consultant who worked tirelessly to ensure that the project was completed within the scheduled period.  She urged the communities to take over the ownership of the project, ensure its maintenance and sustainability.

In his remarks, the governor of Enugu state, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi represented by Hon. Chijioke Edoga, commissioner for environment expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government for the project.  According to him, the project has impacted positively on the people urging the communities to make use of the roads and drainages without causing any damage to them.

In their separate speeches, the Chairman, Udi Local Government Area, Mr. Ifeanyi Agu expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the project.  Engr. Dominic Obodo representing the Igwe of Eke community while thanking the Federal Government, noted that the project was the first of its kind in the community.  He pledged the support of the community both state and federal government while calling for the second phase of the project to link up other communities.

The event was attended by many dignitaries including, Mr. Ifeanyi Agu – executive chairman of Udi Local Government Area, Engr. Dominic Obodo representing the Igwe of Eke,Mr Onyeka Nwabuisi, president Ogui-Agu Eke Development Union among other prominent sons and daughters of  the community.

Guests were entertained by Adamma dance group of Ngwo.
