SIGH OF RELIEF AS FG INTERVENES IN THE FLOOD AND EROSION RAVAGEING RAMAT POLYTECHNIC, MAIDUGURI BORNO STATE
Ramat Polytechnic being one of the oldest Tertiary Institutions in Maiduguri had been experiencing serious erosion and flood menace that threatened the foundation of many buildings within the campus and its environs.
However, hope was restored to the campus when the Rector of the Institution Dr.Modu Kyari, made a request through Ecological Fund Office (EFO), domiciled in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), for urgent intervention to arrest the continuous flooding and erosion threat on the campus and to avoid further environmental degradation and loss of properties.
Commissioning and handing over the flood and erosion control project, President Mohammadu Buhari who was represented by the member, House Committee on Ecology Hon. Ado Sani Kiri said that the project was one of the 1st quarter 2018 ecological intervention projects approved by Federal Executive Council on 17th May, 2018.
Dr. Kiri stated that the project was expected to address the devastating effects of flooding and erosion within the campus and its environs. He further said that the implementation of the project was to keep in faith with the present administration’s promise that no part of the country will suffer any neglect owing to its geographical location or political affiliation. The Honorable Member underscored the Federal Government concerted effort and sincerity of purpose in tackling environmental problems and making life more meaningful for the people.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office (EFO), Dr. Habiba Lawal attributed the timely completion of the project to the contractor and consultant who worked tirelessly to ensure minimum loss of time in the project implementation schedule and the close monitoring by the EFO.
Dr.Lawal represented by one of her deputy directors in the department of Soil, Erosion and Flood Control Engr.Udochi Nwachukwu, emphasized that the commissioning and handing over of the project to the benefitting community was expected to achieve the dual purpose of enabling the host community to take over and exercise ownership over the project.
Also speaking, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Modu Kyari commended the FG for the urgent intervention and the contractor for the quality and standard materials used for the project, he also requested for the approval of more phases to sustain the first phase.
In attendance were the Chief of staff,Govt House, Prof .Isa Marte Hussaini, Hon.Commmissioner Min of Higer Education,Science ,Technology and Innovation, Engr.Dr.Baba Gana Mustapha, and the Permanent Secretary, Min of Higher Education, Alhaji Moh’d Abacha.
