FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COMMISSIONS PROJECT IN ONITSHA; WARNS RESIDENTS ON BLOCKAGE OF DRAINAGES

The Federal government has commissioned the flood and erosion control project around Ochanja Market Fegge Onitsha, Anambra state with a warning on residents not to dump refuse in the drainage channels.

The Hon. Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwuka handed this warning while commissioning the project, pointing out that the project was expected to check flooding, gully erosion menace and bring a huge relief to the residents of the area.

Professor Anuwuka who represented President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, Pointed out that the ‘’project is a testimony to the Present Administration’s promise that no part of the country will suffer any neglect owing to its geographical location or political consideration’’.

Earlier in her welcome address, Dr. Habiba Lawal, Permanent Secretary Ecological Fund Office represented by Engr. Udochi Nwachukwu Deputy Director, Soil Erosion and Flood Control department stated that the project was one of thirteen (13) No. ecological intervention project approved by Mr. President for the fourth Quarter,2017 and was awarded by the Federal Executive Council( FEC) on 4th May 2018.

The Permanent Secretary pointed out that the project was initiated through request for an urgent intervention forwarded to the Ecological Fund Office by Hon. Bar. Lynda Chuba Ikpeazu, Honorable member representing Onitsha north and South Federal Constituency, in order to arrest the continuous erosion menace and improve the access road. She commended the effort of the contractor and consultant for timely completion of the project

The Anambra State deputy Governor Dr. Nkem Okeke urged the resident of the community to desist from dumping refuse in the drainage channels. He pledges to follow up on the provision of refuse bin by the Onitsha South Local Government Council to provide an alternative for the people to dispose their refuse.

Dr. Okeke Commended Hon. Lynda Ikpeazu for good and quality representation of the people evidenced in the project she attracted to the community. He extended the Governor Willie Obiano’s appreciation and thanks to Federal Government especially the Ecological Fund Office for their intervention and enjoined residents to take ownership of the project and maintain it.

The Member representing Onitsha North and South Federal Constituency Honorable Lynda Ikpeazu called on the leadership of Onitsha South Local Government to urgently provide trash bins to enable residents of the Fegge to dispose their refuse.

She however reminded Fegge residents of their responsibility to keep the drains clean and called on the representative of Fegge to sensitize his people towards keeping the drains clean and desist from dumping refuse in them.

While thanking the Federal Government and Hon. Lynda Ikpeazu, the leader of Fegge Community, Chief Mike Ide Ojiakor, stated that prior to the intervention project, the area was devastated by erosion which brought business activities in the area to a halt. He expressed joy that the project had reactivated business activities in the area and pledged to mobilize and sensitize members of Fegge community to maintain the drains.

The ceremony was attended by political associates of Hon. Lynda Ikpeazu as well as her Women and Youth Support Groups while Egwu Ndi Eze Cultural group entertained guests.
