FG INAUGURATES ONE OF ITS 19TH ECOLOGICAL INTERVENTION PROJECTS

The Federal government recently inaugurates one of its nineteen ecological intervention projects for 1^st quarter 2018.

The project, which was awarded by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in July, 2018 addressed the continues flooding and erosion menace in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra state and its environs.

Handing over the completed project to the Community, the president Muhammadu Buhari represented by the Hon. Minister of state for Environment, Chief Sharon Ikeazor pointed out that the intervention would having a huge relief to the community which had for a long time been stressed by ecological challenges.

The president stated that the project was a testimony to the present administrations promise that no part of the country will suffer any neglect owing to its geographical locations or political consideration adding that with the project, the living standard of the people in Umunze and its environs would be enhanced.

In his remarks, the Anambra state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano represented by his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke thanked the Federal Government for the intervention project. He lamented that Anambra state was continuously loosing its land meant for farming to flood and gully erosion and appealed to Federal Government for more assistance. He urged the people of the state to desist from land excavation and littering of the environment with plastics as these contribute to ecological challenges being faced by the state.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary Ecological Fund Office Dr. Habiba Lawal represented by Engr. Felix Okeke, Director Soil, Erosion and Flood Control department of Ecological Fund Office, pointed out that timely completion of the project was made possible through the efforts of the project contractor and consultant complimented with the very close monitoring and prompt honouring of all contractual obligations by the EFO. She urged the community to takeover and exercise ownership of the project, to ensure its maintenance and sustainability.

The president, Umunze progressive union, John Akanyeronu expressed gratitude to the president for approving the project. He pointed out before the intervention, the people of Umunze could access the road leading to their ancestoral home as the road was impassable.

He assured of his community’s support to the Government and to maintain the drainages.

The ceremony was attended by politicians, traditional rulers and heads of government agencies both federal and state, while Umunze women group presented gifts to the quest of honour.
